Marriage equality advocates say they are disappointed the Federal Government has rejected international concerns about Australia’s ban on same-sex marriages.

In its response to a UN review of Australia’s human rights record, the Federal Government has ruled out allowing same-sex couples to marry.

This is despite concern about Australia’s failure to allow or recognise same-sex marriages being raised by countries such as Norway.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said Australia’s human rights record will suffer the longer marriage discrimination continues.

“Countries that have marriage equality, like Norway, are concerned about the failure of Australian to law to respect their legal same-sex marriages”, Mr Greenwich said.

“As the number of such countries increases the current same-sex marriage ban will increasingly taint Australia’s human rights record.”

The report of Australia’s non-government human rights sector to the UN review endorsed marriage equality.
