Albert Park MP Martin Foley has joined forces with four other Victorian Labor politicians to canvass local opinions on gay marriage.

The move comes after Greens Melbourne MP Adam Bandt’s motion in Federal Parliament last year for MPs to consult their constituents on the controversial topic. So far, few MPs have done so.

Mr Foley is joined by Brunswick’s Jane Garrett, Melbourne’s Bronwyn Pike, Northcote’s Fiona Richardson and Richmond’s Richard Wynne in polling their constituents.

“Essentially our view is that the national parliament passed a resolution to consult on the issue. Having seen not much evidence of consultation, we decided to do so ourselves,” Mr Foley said.

“The community seems to share our view that the current federal laws are unfair and that change is inevitable.”

Mr Foley said postcards asking for people’s views on gay marriage had been distributed in Port Phillip cafes, art galleries, libraries and food stores. An online survey is also available at rainbowlabor.com
