A Senate committee has opened the way for same-sex marriage to be legalised in Canberra, recommending greater autonomy for the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Greens leader Bob Brown introduced a Bill to the Senate in September seeking to remove the governor-general’s power to disallow, on recommendation from cabinet, any laws passed by the ACT or the Northern Territory.

Labor’s federal caucus voted in March to pass the Greens’ Bill but Prime Minister Julia Gillard subsequently referred it to a Senate committee after some of her more conservative MPs argued the legislation would allow same-sex marriage in the ACT.
