Three delegations travelled to Canberra to discuss the issue of same-sex marriage last week, holding meetings which advocates say were received with an “open door” by MPs on both sides of parliament.

Representatives from lobby group Australian Marriage Equality, national support organisation PFLAG and international human rights body, Human Rights Watch, met with parliamentarians on Wednesday, March 23, the same day a 16,000-strong petition against same-sex marriage was tabled in the Senate.

The meetings come in the wake of comments by the Prime Minister Julia Gillard on national television, in which she said she was against gay marriage because of her conservative upbringing.
