The GLBT community is being urged to make their voices heard after a petition against same-sex marriage containing more than 16,000 signatures was tabled in the Senate.

Tasmanian Liberal Senator Guy Barnett today tabled 16,506 petitions in support of marriage as defined in the Marriage Act.

The signatures were collected from around Australia over a six week period.

That such a large number of signatures were collected in such a short space of time “sent a message that the traditional definition of marriage is worthy of protection and support,” Barnett said.

Federal law currently defines marriage as a union “between a man and a woman”.
