The Labor Right believes it has recruited Julia Gillard’s personal support to oppose any attempts to introduce euthanasia laws only 48 hours after the Prime Minister overturned government support for a Greens motion paving the way for the nation’s first same-sex marriage laws.

As divisions intensified within the federal ALP over support for territory rights and potential for gay marriage laws, conservative Labor MPs are claiming Ms Gillard intends to support their campaign against any moves to introduce euthanasia.

Earlier this week, Bob Brown said he would be urging Ms Gillard to overturn the 1997 law banning euthanasia as part of a Greens campaign to introduce such legislation in parliaments around Australia.

Although the Greens leader’s private member’s bill on territory rights excluded euthanasia, some Labor MPs feared it would allow same-sex marriage in the ACT and promote the Greens’ euthanasia campaign.
