Supporters of same sex marriage face an uphill battle to get legislation through the South Australian Parliament.

MPs had been expected to cast a conscience vote, but the Opposition in the Legislative Council has decided to vote as a block against the legislation.

Shadow attorney-general Stephen Wade said the bill could not be supported because South Australia did not have jurisdiction over marriage.

“We don’t need to waste taxpayers’ money on bills that we believe are not within the legislative competence of the South Australian Parliament,” he said.
