Ahead of his appearance at Queer Thinking, gay activist Peter Tatchell spoke to Brendan Bolger about marriage equality, civil unions and what has driven him to fight for equal rights for more than 40 years.

In recent months, he has campaigned tirelessly in the UK to overturn the twin bans on relationship recognition – same-sex couples marrying and straight couples entering a civil partnership.

This weekend, the UK’s Equal Love campaign coordinator, Peter Tatchell, will be the headline speaker at New Mardi Gras’ Queer Thinking series in support of marriage equality.

“Personally, I don’t like marriage. I share the feminist critique of its history of sexism and patriarchy. I would not want to get married,” Tatchell told City Voice last month.
