Hyper-texter pants man Shane Warne is out of step with his times. He is like a throwback to the ’70s when men viewed the dating scene as an all-you-can-eat banquet. The ocker rogue is lovable and who wouldn’t wish him well in his latest dalliance with Liz Hurley? But Warne is no Everyman. He is not typical.

Increasingly, the research shows men are as keen as women to get and stay married; at some ages, more so. They are just not that into being single – at least not long-term. They are keen to have children, and more likely than women to think it better for children if their parents are married. Men, in other words, have become more interested in family life, and have ceased to derive their identity mainly from their achievements at work – or in the playing field, or from playing the field.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the revolution in marriage is amazing to contemplate. That men’s view of marriage largely coincides with women’s, and in some aspects is more enthusiastic, is just the latest chapter in the dismantling of a once-rigid institution.
