Andrew Heslop’s idea of a dream wedding was to marry in Adelaide’s famous parklands in front of friends and family.

But controversial Australian gay marriage laws prevented that from happening.

Instead, Mr Heslop had to travel to New Zealand to marry his partner, client relations manager Fabian Sanchez Navarro, 32.

The pair tied the knot at an evening picnic ceremony in Auckland’s Albert Park late last month.

“The wedding was beautiful, but it was really disappointing that we have not yet been able to get married in Adelaide,” Mr Heslop said.

The couple is among a growing number of people, including South Australian senator Penny Wong, who want same-sex marriage to be legalised.

And this could happen in South Australia if a Bill before State Parliament is voted into law as early as next year.
