Australian Marriage Equality (AME) today welcomed the decision by the Brisbane City Council to put forward a motion calling on the Federal Government to legislate for marriage equality.

It’s very exciting that the Brisbane City Council will pass a bipartisan motion in support of marriage equality,” AME Queensland Convener Peter Black said.

“Marriage equality is a simple issue of fairness and equality for all Australians and it’s an issue that can be achieved by a vote in the Parliament.

“If passed, Brisbane will become the first council in Queensland to pass a motion in support of marriage equality.

“We hope other councils in Queensland will follow Brisbane’s example with similar motions in the months ahead.

“This is a significant step as Brisbane is not only an LNP controlled council, it is the largest local government in Australia, with a population roughly equivalent to the populations of Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory combined.

“We thank the Lord Mayor, Cr Graham Quirk, for his commitment to an inclusive Brisbane, as well as the leader of the Opposition, Cr Peter Cumming for his support.  It’s also important to acknowledge the support of Councillors Nicole Johnson and Jonathan Sri.

“The issue of Marriage Equality is about members of our families, our friends, neighbours and workmates. They should be able to have the same aspirations and opportunities in life as every Australian,” Mr Black concluded.
