Advocates have welcomed the Darwin City Council’s decision to support marriage equality and have called on other Northern Territory councils to follow Darwin’s lead.

At its Tuesday night meeting Darwin Council passed a motion in favour of marriage equality. In an Australian first the Council called on the National General Assembly of Local Government to also endorse the reform.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Darwin Council’s decision sends a strong message to Canberra to get on with the job of passing this over due reform.”

“We urge other Northern Territory councils to follow Darwin’s lead.”

“There are now about 40 councils across Australia that have passed motions like this and I expect more to follow in the coming months.”

Mr Croome said the Northern Territory is the only Australian jurisdiction where all federal members support the reform.
