Marriage equality advocates have praised Melbourne’s Yarra City Council for becoming the latest Australian local government to support the reform.

Last night Yarra Council unanimously passed a motion supporting marriage equality and committing the Council to write to the federal government informing it of the motion.

Australian Marriage Equality Victorian director and Yarra City resident, Tim Peppard, said,

“I’m very proud of my local council for taking a leadership role on marriage equality.”

“One of the main tasks of local government is to promote social inclusion and advocating for marriage equality clearly falls into that remit.”

“I call on other councils to follow Yarra’s lead and send a message that all their residents deserve to be treated fairly and equally.”

The motion was proposed by Cr Jackie Fristacky and seconded by Cr Roberto Colanzi.

Almost forty local governments across Australia have backed marriage equality, most in Victoria (list below).
