Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a new poll showing Australians want Malcolm Turnbull to take stronger action on the issue despite opposition in his own party.

The Australia Institute released a survey today showing 61% of Australians want the Prime Minister to act on the issue, including 52% of Liberal voters.

Australian Marriage Equality national deputy director, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, said,

“The onus is on the Prime Ministers to act in the interests of all Australians and move to marriage equality as quickly as possible.”

“This poll is a reminder that Australians not only want marriage equality but they want it soon so the nation can move on.”

“We are seeking a meeting with Mr Turnbull in the hope we can work with him to get this done.”

The Australia Institute survey asked over 1000 respondents if they want to see stronger action from Mr Turnbull on a range of issues including human refugee policies (55%) and climate change (67%).
