Advocates have welcomed the fact that almost half the members of the new federal Cabinet are publicly-declared supporters of marriage equality, double the percentage under Tony Abbott.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“It is very encouraging to see the federal government more reflective of public opinion.”

“We call on supporters of marriage equality in Cabinet to show leadership and advocate for reform within government ranks so the next time the issue comes up it can be resolved quickly and effectively.”
Ten out of twenty one members of Malcolm Turnbull’s Cabinet publicly support marriage equality (48%) compared to five out of nineteen under Tony Abbott (26%).

Recent polls have shown public for marriage equality at about 70%.
