Advocates have congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on becoming Prime Minister and will seek a meeting with him to move the reform forward.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“This is the first time in Australia’s history that both the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition have supported marriage equality, giving us an unprecedented opportunity to achieve the reform.”

“We will seek an urgent meeting with Mr Turnbull to chart a way forward on a reform that he knows is important and urgent.”

“Our preferred path forward remains a free vote in parliament this year, which can be achieved by a vote on Warren Entsch’s co-sponsored bill.”

“A majority of Liberal MPs supported a Leader who supports marriage equality, and we call on Mr Turnbull to now deliver the reform as quickly as possible.”
