Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a report that Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, has dropped plans for a referendum on the issue.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“We welcome reports that a marriage equality referendum is off the table because it would be unnecessary and expensive.”
“Referenda are for Constitutional issues and there are no Constitutional issues to resolve.”
“If there is to be a public vote, our preference is for a plebiscite at the next election to reduce the delay and the cost.”
“I have no doubt a plebiscite with a fair question that has cross-party support would result in a majority vote for marriage equality.”
This week the Senate voted to conduct an inquiry into a public vote on marriage equality, including issues such as the question to be asked, the timing, the voting process and public funding.
