Advocates have welcomed the third National Party MP to declare support for marriage equality in as many days.

Northern NSW MP, Kevin Hogan, has declared his support for the reform following support from Northern Territory Senator, Nigel Scullion, and Victorian MP, Darren Chester.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Kevin Hogan, Darren Chester and Nigel Scullion are reflecting the fact that rural and regional Australians are backing marriage equality in increased numbers.”

“It’s time for Tony Abbott to fulfill his pre-election promise and allow a free vote so that these MPs can represent their constituents.”

Recent polling by Reachtel in four regional and rural Liberal and National-held seats showed support for a free vote ranging between 64% and 69%.

Mr Croome responded to Mr Hogan’s call for churches to be protected by saying all three marriage equality bills currently before parliament make it clear no religious celebrant will be forced to marry same-sex couples against their wishes.
