Advocates have praised Northern Territory federal Liberal MP, Natasha Griggs, for coming out in support marriage equality.

Mrs Griggs change of heart came after she sought the views of her electorate and found 86% support.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“We congratulate Natasha Griggs for seeking the views of her electors and for changing her position in response to these views.”

“Natasha Griggs’ support for marriage equality increases pressure on Tony Abbott to allow a free vote on the issue, while the result of her community consultation is a reminder there is strong support for marriage equality in regional Australia.”

“We call on other MPs to follow Mrs Griggs’ lead and listen to their local communities on marriage equality.”

Just a week after Mrs Grigg’s launched her survey she received 2500 responses, 86% of which said “yes” to marriage equality.

Mrs Grigg’s electorate covers Darwin and Palmerston.
