An Essential poll released today shows support for marriage equality continues to rise with 59% support, up from 55% in December 2014 and 53% in November 2010 according to previous Essential polls.

Marriage equality advocates welcomed today’s poll saying it shows supporters for marriage equality outnumber opponents by a two-to-one margin, similar to the result of the landmark Irish referendum.

Deputy Director of Australian Marriage Equality, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, said,

“The Essential poll demonstrates marriage equality is at least as well supported in Australia as in Ireland, and confirms that we should follow Ireland down the same path.”

“Essential results on marriage equality have always been lower than the results from other well-respected research companies, including Crosby-Textor which found 72% support last year.”

“What matters here is that the results on all polls, no matter the company that conducts them, is a constant, irreversible increase in support for marriage equality.”

The Essential poll showed majority support among men (54%), women (64%) and under 35s (69%).

34% of respondents said they were more likely to vote for a political party that supports marriage equality, against 22% who said they would be less likely.

Mr Hinton-Teoh said “According to the Essential poll, support for marriage equality is clearly a vote winner.”
