Marriage equality advocates have praised Victorian Liberal MP, Sarah Henderson, for backing marriage equality.

Ms Henderson, whose seat of Corangamite takes in western Geelong and Colac, revealed her support today, saying it is “consistent with fundamental Liberal values”.

Convener of Geelong for Marriage Equality, Sharyn Faulkner, said,

“Geelong for Marriage Equality is extremely happy that through Sarah Henderson the Corangamite LGBTI community and their families and friends will now have a voice in parliament that truly believes in human rights and in equality for all Australians.”

“When we first met with Sarah, over eighteen months ago, she challenged us to provide her with evidence to show that the Corangamite electorate wants marriage equality. We are proud to have been able to assist Sarah in this quest. We encouraged the City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire to support marriage equality. We have been instrumental in getting the Geelong Football Club and the AFL to support marriage equality. We have spoken to thousands of people and delivered thousands of emails, letters and postcards to Sarah’s office.”

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, echoed Ms Faulker’s praise for Ms Henderson.

“Sarah Henderson did the right thing listening to her electorate and will do the right thing representing their support for marriage equality in parliament.”

According to a statement posted on Ms Henderson’s website, “support for marriage equality is consistent with fundamental Liberal values which embrace freedom of the individual and stable, long term relationships”.
