Advocates will seek a meeting with Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to discuss moving marriage equality forward.

The move comes after Mr Abbott gave a green light to cross-party cooperation on marriage equality and a Coalition party room debate on a free vote later this year.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“We welcome Mr Abbott’s recognition that marriage equality is an important issue for many Australians, and we will seek a meeting with him to discuss how we can work together to move the issue forward.”

“In particular, will seek a commitment to a timetable because it is vital the reform move forward without unnecessary delays.”

Mr Croome urged Mr Abbott to heed support from leading conservative Sydney radio host, Alan Jones, and prominent North Queensland Liberal MP, Ewen Jones.

Alan Jones made a passionate plea for marriage equality on his popular radio program yesterday, while Ewen Jones said he has been convinced to support marriage equality because it is what Jesus would do.

“I urge Mr Abbott to keep up with the Joneses”, Mr Croome said.
