Marriage equality advocates have warmly welcomed support for the issue from Western Sydney Labor frontbencher, Ed Husic.

Mr Husic, the nation’s first Muslim federal MP, has previously voted against marriage equality, saying he would represent community sentiment.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Following close on the heels of support from another western Sydney MP, Chris Bowen, Ed Husic’s support shows growing momentum for marriage equality in an area traditionally stereotyped as opposed to the reform.”

“Ed Husic’s support for marriage equality also sends a message to Muslim Australian that it is possible to be a person of faith and to support a fair go for all their fellow citizens.”

“The message to those MPs who are yet to publicly support marriage equality is that the nation is increasingly comfortable with the prospect of same-sex couples marrying, and it’s time for them to come out for reform.”

It has been reported that Mr Husic said,

“Constituents would ask: ‘Why can’t you support us in the things we want to do in our lives?’ These situations made me think deeply about the issue and if there was no logical reason to prevent this change, why stand in the way of it?”

“Government should be about empowering people to pursue the things important to them in their lives. That’s why I will support marriage equality in any future vote on this matter”.

Australian Marriage Equality recently launched a grass roots campaign in western Sydney.
