Port Phillip City Council unanimously backs marriage equality.

Advocates have welcomed support for a Coalition free vote on marriage equality from Liberal Senator, Arthur Sinodinis.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“I thank Senator Sinodinis for his leadership on the issue of a Coalition marriage equality free vote.”

“I call on other Liberals to follow Senator Sinodinis’ example and show their support for what is a basic Liberal principle, freedom of individual conscience.”

“Clearly, discussion of a Labor Party marriage equality binding vote has not dampened debate on a Coalition free vote, as some people fear, but has inspired further debate about the Coalition’s stance.”

Senator Sinodinis, who supports the reform, was a senior advisor to former Prime Minister, John Howard.

Mr Croome also welcomed unanimous support for marriage equality from the Port Phillip City Council in Melbourne.

With last night’s unanimous vote, Port Phillip joins a growing list of over 40 councils across Australia that have passed motions in support of marriage equality and will write to the federal government urging action on the issue.

“I call on other local governments to follow Port Phillip’s lead and support social inclusion by urging Canberra to act on marriage equality.”
