$2000 worth of new lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) resources for the Huon Valley community, funded by the Tasmanian Government and based at the Geeveston Community Centre, was launched on Friday.

The resources include books, DVDs and magazines covering issues including LGBTI coming out, parenting, history, biography and support.

The secretary of the Geeveston Community Centre committee, Peter Scott, said,

“The aim of our new collection of resources is to fill a gap that existed. There was nothing in the Huon Valley to address issues for LGBTI people, their families and heterosexual people who have questions about LGBTI issues.”

“We also want to provide resources for professionals and community workers.”

Convener of Rainbow Communities Tasmania and Huon Valley resident, Deidre Murray, said,

“I congratulate the Geeveston Community Centre and the Tasmanian Government for an immensely important partnership that will create a better community.”

“The Geeveston Community Centre and Tasmanian Government are leading the way in support for LGBTI people and our families in rural areas and at a local level.”

The new resources were funded through the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s LGBTI community grants program which is now in its sixth year.

Two photos are attached of Tasmanian Premier, Will Hodgman, at the Geeveston Community Centre on Friday. In one photo he is with Peter Scott, and Deidre Murray’s children, Ella and Tyler Murray. In the second he is accompanied by Tyler Murray. The book featured in both photos is “Labels are so Gay” by Tasmanian author, Alice Hansen.
