Marriage equality advocates have welcomed reports that Labor Senator, Penny Wong, and her partner, Sophie Allouache, are expecting their second child.

Deputy Director of Australian Marriage Equality, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, said,

“We congratulate Penny and Sophie on their wonderful news.”

“Their growing family is a reminder that same-sex couples experience the same joys and challenges as other couples and deserve the same protections and recognition.”

“The children of same-sex couples can benefit from the sense of stability and validation that comes from having parents who are legally able to marry.”

Mr Hinton-Teoh said that in 2015 Senator David Leyonhjelm’s Freedom to Marry Bill will provide federal politicians with an opportunity to ensure all couples and families are treated equally in the law.

“It’s time for state-sanctioned prejudice against same-sex couples and their families to be erased from the Marriage Act.”
