Advocates have welcomed a decision by the Geelong City Council to support marriage equality and to write to federal MP, Sarah Henderson, urging her to vote for it.

Australian Marriage Equality deputy director, Ivan Hinton, said,

“Geelong City Council has shown great leadership in supporting fairness for all its citizens and standing up for their same-sex couples.”

“Geelong’s councillors have demonstrated that we can all play a part in showing the Federal government the strong community support for marriage equality.”

The Council has joined the Geelong Football Club who recently became the first senior AFL team to support the reform.

Hinton said “Now its time the federal member Sarah Henderson listened to her local council, her footy club and her constituents to back a reform that will strengthen families and help the local economy.”

At the weekend the nation’s leading marriage equality advocates will visit Geelong and Colac urging supporters of the reform to lobby Ms Henderson on the issue.

The visit will be the first of up to 50 to suburban and regional electorates around Australia.
