Advocates have welcomed the re-election of key marriage equality supporters to the South Australian parliament.

Australian Marriage Equality, national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Ian Hunter has been one of Australia’s strongest marriage equality advocates, and is one of three Australian MPs in a same-sex marriage, so we congratulate him on his re-election.”

“Rachel Sanderson is one of the strongest supporters of marriage equality in the SA Liberal Party and we hope her likely re-election will add pressure for a free vote.”

Mr Croome said Liberal leader, Steven Marshall, may have made more ground if, like Tasmanian Liberal leader, Will Hodgman, he had allowed a free vote on the issue.

“An important message to the South Australian Liberal Party from this election is that a hardline against marriage equality does not pave a path to office.”

“Allowing a free vote would have brought it more in line with public opinion and given it a better chance of winning government.”
