Kyron Howell, Rodney Croome, Jenny Archer and Jen Evans with Mr Howell’s rainbow election signs

A Tasmanian election candidate, Kyron Howell, has become the first state Liberal candidate to publicly support state same-sex marriage laws.

Mr Howell said,

“I support marriage equality in Tasmania, not despite being a Liberal, but because I’m a Liberal.”

“I dream of a Tasmania that leads the world in many different ways, including marriage equality.”

“Tasmania taking the lead on a key issue like marriage equality would send a positive message to the world that we an inclusive and forward-looking community and an attractive place to live, work and invest.”

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, welcomed Mr Howell’s support.

“Marriage equality is about individual freedom, and strengthening relationships and families, all things which Liberals can support.”

“A majority of Liberal voters support marriage equality and are looking for candidates like Kyron Howell to reflect their values.”

“We congratulate Will Hodgman for allowing a conscience vote on marriage equality so MPs who share Kyron’s views can vote for it.”

Kyron Howell’s stance was welcomed by North West Coast couple, Jenny Archer and Jen Evans.

Jenny Archer said,

“We have been togetheer for seven years and would dearly love to be able to publicly declare our commitment.”

“I don’t want other same-sex attracted people to grow up feeling isolated and alone like i did in rural Tasmania.”

Jen Evans said,

“Prejudice and homophobia will continue to be entrenched in our community as long same-sex couples are excluded from such an important legal and social institution as marriage.”

Australian Marriage Equality has released results of a survey of state election candidates which shows several Liberals support marriage equality at a state and/or federal level.
