Advocates have welcomed a poll showing a majority of South Australians want their state to take the lead on marriage equality.

In a poll published in today’s Adelaide Advertiser, almost 60% of a sample of 2835 South Australians answered “yes” when asked “Should gay marriage be legal in SA?”.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Clearly, last year’s High Court override of an ACT marriage equality law has not dented popular support for the states taking the lead on this urgent and important reform.”

“A well-framed law, like the ones that have recently been proposed in South Australia, has a much better chance of surviving a High Court challenge than the ACT’s former law.”

Both Premier, Jay Weatherill, and Opposition Leader, Steven Marshall, support marriage equality in principle, but Mr Marshall believes a state law would be unconstitutional.

The poll comes just three weeks before the SA state election.

State same-sex marriage laws have been also proposed in Tasmania, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.
