Marriage equality advocates have welcomed four Liberal state premiers throwing their support behind a federal Coalition conscience vote on marriage equality.

Barry O’Farrell, Denis Napthine, Colin Barnett and Campbell Newman have all urged the federal parliament to deal with the issue.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“If Coalition leaders as conservative as Colin Barnett can see the importance of a marriage equality conscience vote, Tony Abbott has no excuses.”

“With four Liberal premiers telling Tony Abbott that community attitudes are changing and a marriage equality conscience vote is a no-brainer he’d be unwise not to listen.”

The Liberal premiers’ support for federal action on marriage equality comes the day after the High Court overturned the ACT’s Marriage Equality Act and affirmed that the federal parliament has the constitutional power to enact laws for same-sex marriages, removing the question mark that hung over the constitutional definition of marriage.
