Media Conference: there will be a media conference with same-sex married couples and marriage equality advocates at 1.45pm today in Old Parliament House Senate court yard.

Marriage equality advocates are overjoyed that Australia now has its first legally married same-sex couples.

Australia Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome said,

“This is an important day for same-sex couples and our families, but also for the nation, because today Australia is a fairer and more equal country that values love more highly.”

“Today’s weddings are a reminder that this reform is ultimately not about politics or laws, but about love, commitment and family, values we all share.”

AME deputy director, Ivan Hinton, who will marry his fiance, Chris Teoh today at 1PM, said,

“Today Chris and I awoke to a community that embraces us for who we are, recognises the value of our commitment to one another and shares in our hope for the future.”

“Even before our wedding begins we’re on cloud nine.”

The Telstra Tower on Black Mountain blacked out at 11.59pm yesterday evening and then turned back on at 12am lit in sequential rainbow colours to mark the first same-sex weddings which take place at 12.01am.

Mr Hinton’s wedding will be at 1pm at the Senate Court Yard of Old Parliament House. Mr Hinton and Mr Teoh, plus other couples who have married, plus advocates for marriage equality, will gather after his wedding to speak to the media at 1.45pm in Old Parliament House Senate courtyard.

Mr Hinton will be out of contact from 10am to 1.45pm. In that time all inquiries should be directed to Mr Croome.
