Advocates say young Australians will be voting for candidates who support marriage equality following the release of a national poll showing young people rate same-sex marriage as a top priority for this election.

A poll released today by the Australia Institute shows same-sex marriage is among the top four concerns of young voters in the upcoming federal election, ahead of climate change, youth allowance and the NBN.

“What this poll shows is that young voters see marriage equality as a signature issue that will strongly influence who they vote for.”

“The message to candidates is that support for marriage equality is the way to attract young voters.”

“In particular, the message to Tony Abbott and the Coalition is that failure to allow Coalition MPs a conscience vote on marriage equality is driving away young voters.”

The Australian Institute poll confirms the results of a recent Galaxy poll which found 54% of 18 to 24 year olds say they are more likely to vote Labor because of Kevin Rudd’s decision to support marriage equality.

The AI poll found that only key bread-and-butter issues – jobs, housing and University funding – rated more highly than same-sex marriage.
