Marriage equality advocates say they will step up their campaign for state same-sex marriage laws following the release today of a NSW parliament report which confirms that the states do have the power to enact such a law.
Australian Marriage Equality WA convener, Brian Greig, welcomed the report saying,
“While a federal law for equal marriage is ideal, we cannot wait forever for the commonwealth to act and this is hampered by Tony Abbott’s refusal to allow the Liberals to have a conscience vote in Canberra.”
“In contrast, Premier Barnett has said he will allow a conscience vote for his party in WA, and so with Labor and Green support a Bill is most likely to pass here before we see any national reform.”
Mr Greig called for MPs in the state parliament who support reform to work together and co-sponsor an Equal Marriage Bill that would enjoy majority support both in parliament and in the community.
