Marriage equality advocates have welcomed the nomination of openly-gay man, John Berry, as the next US ambassador to Australia.

Australian Marriage Equality national secretary, Jay Allen, who met Mr Berry on a recent visit to the United States, said Berry is a strong supporter of marriage equality.

“As an ambassador for a nation moving rapidly forwards on marriage equality, I hope Mr Berry will also be an ambassador for the benefits of this important reform when he is dealing with Australia’s leaders.”

“By being an openly-gay man in such a senior position, Mr Berry will also send a strong message to our national leaders that discrimination on the grounds of sexuality is no longer acceptable.”

Mr Allen met Mr Berry when the latter was Director of the US government’s Office of Personnel Management.

Mr Berry’s nomination is yet to be confirmed by the US Senate.
