NEW MARRIAGE EQUALITY POLL SHOWS 4 OUT OF 5 AUSSIES WANT COALITION FREE VOTE

Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a new poll showing strong public support for the reform, saying it increases pressure on the Coalition to allow a conscience vote on the issue.

The Roy Morgan poll surveyed a representative sample of Australian voters and found 65% believe same-sex couples should be able to marry and 79% believe all MPs should have a conscience vote on the issue.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“Tony Abbott allowing Liberal MPs a marriage equality conscience vote is not just the right thing to do but also the smart thing to do as we head into an election.”

“The latest poll shows Australians remain as keen as ever to see this important reform enacted.”
