The former PM used his website to communicate his stance on the topic where he said, “I have come to the conclusion that church and state can have different positions and practices on the question of same sex marriage.

“I believe the secular Australian state should be able to recognise same sex marriage. I also believe that this change should legally exempt religious institutions from any requirement to change their historic position and practice that marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman.”

Rudd said his decision was based on a conversation with a former political staffer, who he did not name, on Saturday morning in Canberra.

During the chat the individual told Rudd he was gay and would like to get married one day before asking him what his opinion was on the topic.

This triggered Rudd to think about his position.

“My opponents both within and beyond the Labor Party, will read all sorts of political significances into this. That’s a matter for them. There is no such thing as perfect timing to go public on issues such as this.

“I will not be taking any leadership role on this issue nationally. My core interest is to be clear-cut about the change in my position locally on this highly controversial issue before the next election, so that my constituents are fully aware of my position when they next visit the ballot box.”

The decision received a wave of support on social media with independent member for Sydney, Alexander Greenwich, posting on twitter it was an “Obama-style” decision.

“Great news that @KRuddMP will be among key ALP MPs to vote for #marriageequality on June 6. Thank you @adambandt for putting your bill up”

Greens senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, said “Congratulations to Kevin Rudd on changing his mind and opening his heart to #marriageequality and giving love a chance.”

Mr Rudd signed off on his statement knowing it will likely divide his party.
