The state MP for Brisbane Central has become the first Newman government member apart from the premier to publicly support same-sex marriage.
The LNP’s Robert Cavallucci told the hosts of Briz 31 show QTV that he favours marriage equality.

“I’m someone with particularly progressive views on marriage equality, so yes, I do support it,” he said.
But he conceded it was not a universal stance in the party room.

“Not every electorate is like the inner-city of Brisbane which I represent,” he said.
“We come from such diverse backgrounds and diverse electorates… I think some of us have particular views and some of us have opposing views.”
QTV launched last month to discuss issues affecting Brisbane’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer community.
Co-host Matthew Bo said he was not surprised by Mr Cavallucci’s support.
“Ultimately, politicians are here to represent their constituents and his catchment seems to overwhelmingly support marriage equality,” he said.
Last year the state government watered down civil partnerships legislation introduced at the end of Labor’s term to allow homosexual couples the right to a public commitment ceremony.
Premier Campbell Newman had been upfront in the past about his personal support for same-sex marriage, but said the changes reflected the views of his MPs.
Outgoing senator Sue Boyce is Queensland’s only federal Liberal to publicly support marriage equality.
Australian Marriage Equality welcomed Mr Cavallucci’s declaration and called on Brisbane federal MP
Teresa Gambaro to follow suit, quoting a survey her office conducted showing 73 per cent of her constituents supported it.
Ms Gambaro said: “I recognise this issue is important to many people. Tony Abbott has said what our position is after the election will ultimately be in the hands of the post-election party room. I will advocate within the Coalition for a conscience vote on Same Sex Marriage.”
In the interview, Mr Cavallucci was also quizzed on which LNP member would make the best drag queen.
“[Attorney-General] Jarrod Bleijie,” he replied.
