Wintery weather couldn’t dampen “Out in the Open”; a picnic held by a concerned group of gay & lesbian allies in the marginal electorate of Deakin on Sunday 17th March.

Tables were decorated with rainbow cupcakes, fairy bread as well as BBQ sausage sizzle and picnics while GLBTQI family & friends of all ages shared their stories of why they say “I Do” to Marriage Equality.
Aussie rules footballer and BeyondBlue ambassador, Jason Ball, and Carol Wocker, mother of two, led the conversation about “what it was like being gay and being part of a regular family”. Turns out it’s not much different to other families – but Jason did say the thing he remembered that was different was “being given a Barbie Doll as a young boy by his parents”.
Almost all of the stories that were shared contained obstacles and barriers such as “feeling shame” mostly around coming out. For Jason he had been particularly apprehensive as he recalled his own experience of society’s message that being gay and a footballer was not OK.
“Marriage Equality is the answer to removing stigma and it should just hurry up and be over done with,” said Jim Best, a self-described straight supporter. “Don’t get me started… it is a core human issue that is not political and the rest of world is now recognising that. Now we need to get the message to our local MP!”
Carol Wocker, a mad keen Pies supporter, held a great mark during the footy clinic optimistically run by Jason. Several other mums displayed promise with their footy skills. It was noted this was a symbol of having a go and being able to build a strong team as the Marriage Equality supporters had during the picnic event.
Members of Australian Marriage Equality Victoria shared their confidence that MPs are listening now and ready to take the issue on board. Those from the electorate included Rainbow Families and Pflag members. Michelle from PLP Vic said she “valued being part of the new group” and Dan declared “I hope there are more such events.”
