ame-logo1Marriage equality advocates hold out hope the new pope’s opposition to reform will soften when he sees the positive impact in his home country of Argentina.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“Francis I is the first pope to come from a country with marriage equality, and even though he was deeply opposed to reform we urge him to consider how none of the negative impacts he feared have eventuated and many people have benefitted.”

“In Argentina, as elsewhere, heterosexual marriages have not been adversely affected by marriage equality as the Catholic Church said they would, and instead society is more just, and relationships and families have been strengthened.”

“As an Argentinian, Pope Francis is in an excellent position to look beyond old myths and fears and to come to a deeper appreciation of the importance of allowing same-sex couples to marry.”

As the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was a strong opponent of the Argentinian Government’s move to marriage equality.
