An Australian ad that challenges myths and misinformation about marriage equality has won a prestigious international broadcasting award.

“What is marriage really all about?”, produced by Momo Films and commissioned by Australian Marriage Equality, with a voiceover by popular Australian actor, Shane Jacobson, won the gold medal in the social issues category in the global BASS Awards for broadcast design, beating short films and TV ads from around the world.

Momo director, Spencer McLaren, said,

“Winning a BASS Award is a fantastic achievement for a young Australian company like ours. We are very proud to have been involved in such an important issue, and to have our work recognised in this way.”

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome said,

“The award raises the profile of the Australian marriage equality debate, as well as our ongoing efforts to challenge the myths and misinformation that encumber that debate.”

This is not the first time an Australian marriage equality ad has attracted global attention.

“It’s Time”, an ad following a burgeoning relationship between two men, produced by activist organisation GetUp!, attracted a world-wide following and prompted a US imitation.

Three BASS gold medals are awarded every year, one in each of the categories, professional, social issue and young talent.

The recipients are chosen with a 60% weighting to a professional panel and 40% to a popular vote.

The social issues award is for “a single graphic, animation or visual fx video that develops a social/environmental campaign for an institution, company or organization”.
