Australian marriage equality advocates say the likely re-election of President Barack Obama sends a clear message to Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, that the electorate respects and supports politicians who take a principled stand in favour of the issue.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“The re-election of Barack Obama shows Americans clearly respect him for acting on principle and supporting marriage equality, despite his past opposition and regardless of the political consequences.”

“Like Barack Obama, Julia Gillard will benefit by putting the politics of prejudice to one side and taking a principled stand in favour of marriage equality.”

Earlier this year President Obama endorsed marriage equality despite some commentators saying it would cost him at the ballot box. Julia Gillard continues to oppose marriage equality despite her Party adopting a policy in favour.

Mr Croome also welcomed the likely passage of ballots in favour of marriage equality in the states of Maine and Maryland, and possible passage of such ballots in Minnesota and Washington.

“The popular endorsement of marriage equality in several U.S. states again highlights how far Australia is falling behind.”
