Marriage equality advocates have welcomed renewed commitment from the ACT Government to legislate for same-sex marriages.

ACT Green MLA, Shane Rattenbury, has announced that the agreement he has reached with ACT Labor to form a new territory government includes legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“By moving forward on marriage equality the ACT Government is fulfilling the aspiration of the majority of Australians who want full legal equality for same-sex couples.”

“If the ACT becomes the first place in Australia to allow same-sex marriages it will benefit the Territory socially and economically, as well as bringing immense pressure to bear on the states and the Commonwealth to follow suit.”
