Marriage equality advocates have welcomed support for the issue from popular Australian singer-songwriter, Guy Sebastian.

In an interview published today Mr Sebastian said,

“Look at gay marriage. I don’t think anyone has the right to tell someone who they can and can’t be in love with. You look back at the unfair things that happen in history, and this will be looked back on as one of those things.”

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“Like many Australians, Guy Sebastian knows marriage equality is inevitable and that the longer reform takes the more damaging it is for the nation.”

Guy Sebastian’s support for marriage equality has firmed since he last spoke on the issue. In May this year he said,

”At the end of the day I don’t care. I couldn’t care less if two blokes get married or two girls get married or what people do. I’ve always just wanted to stick to writing songs.”

Mr Croome said Sebastian’s increasingly strong views reflects a wider shift in society.

“Successive national polls show people who have been mild supporters of reform are becoming increasingly passionate about the issue as debate continues.”

“The message to politicians is the longer they delay reform, the more voters they alienate.”
