Marriage equality advocates expect next week’s vote on marriage equality to be closer than many people expect.

Four Labor Senators have introduced a bill amending the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to marry. The bill is expected to be voted on next week.

Australian Marriage Equality, National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said,

“With thirty declared supporters in the Senate, we just need eight more Senators to open their hearts and minds to the importance of this reform for Australian couples and families, and the bill will pass the Senate”.

“The vote will be closer than many people expect, and support will be much higher than it has been when this issue was voted on in the past.”

Mr Greenwich said it was no surprise public and parliamentary support for marriage equality is at its highest level ever.

“With 64% of voters now backing the reform, it is no surprise the message is getting through to Canberra.”

“This is a reform which harm no-one, cost the parliament nothing, and will benefit same-sex couples and their families in many meaningful ways.”

“Regardless of the result in the Senate, it is clear both the momentum for reform is unstoppable”
