AUSTRALIA has more than 1300 same-sex couples who wed overseas, with the census counting the marital status of gay and lesbian partners for the first time.

And the national snapshot also reveals 2822 lesbian couples have children, in comparison with 336 male same-sex couples with kids.

With the campaign to legalise same-sex marriage likely to fail, lobbyists say the new statistics show how important it is for marriage-equality legislation to get the support of parliament.
