FORTY years ago South Australia began law reform to decriminalise homosexuality.

Opponents at the time argued that marriage would be next on the equality agenda. They were right, though it took some years.

In fact, it wasn’t really until former prime minister John Howard and opposition leader Mark Latham brought it to public attention by changing the Marriage Act to define marriage to be between a man and a woman, that the issue was brought closer to the surface of social consciousness.
