A federal inquiry into marriage equality held yesterday in Sydney was told, “No one writes love songs about civil unions,” as advocates suggested the positive case they presented emphasising fairness clearly trumped “the tired old arguments” of opponents of the reform, including one fundamentalist Christian group which likened homosexuality to incest.

The inquiry by the Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs headed by committee chairman, Labor MP Graham Perrett, convened at NSW Parliament House on Thursday for hearings which saw various legal, religious and community leaders front up throughout the day to lodge their arguments on marriage equality.
