Australian comedy and film star, Magda Szubanski, has joined other Australian entertainment icons who support the right of gay Australians to marry.

Szubanski, who has performed in hit comedy series such as Fast Forward and Kath and Kim, and starred in the Babe movies, says she is “1000% in favour of gay marriage”.

In a statement issued through Australian Marriage Equality (and included in full below) Ms Szubanski said,

“We should have exactly the same rights as every other Australian including the right to love, marry and take care of our partners.”

“The law as it stands is unfair and it needs to be changed to reflect the wonderful, tolerant, live-and-let-live society Australians have created.”

Ms Szubanski joins other Aussie film and music icons including Hugh Jackman, Olivia Newton-John, Jimmy Barnes, Angry Anderson, Guy Pearce, David Stratton, Margaret Pomeranz, Stephan Elliott and Lizzy Gardiner who also support marriage equality.

When asked on Australian TV why she supports marriage equality Ms Szubanski came out as gay.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Alex Greenwich, welcomed Ms Szubanki’s statement saying it reflects a growing sense among Australians that it’s time for marriage equality.

“Magda and other high-profile supporters of marriage equality are reflecting growing support for the issue and growing impatience with politicians dragging their feet.”

“Like all of us, Magda wants her homeland to live up to its ideals of equality and a fair go.”

Magda Szubanki’s statement:

“I am 1000% in favour of gay marriage. We pay taxes. We fight wars for this country. We nurse you when you are sick. We make you laugh, we sing and dance for you, we play netball for you, we star in your movies, we cook your meals, we decorate your store windows and chances are we designed whatever it is you’re wearing. We should have exactly the same rights as every other Australian including the right to love, marry and take care of our partners.”

“The law as it stands means that you could be a serial killer and have killed all of your spouses and yet you would still be considered fit to marry. But if you are gay then you are not deemed to be worthy of these same rights.”

“The law as it stands is unfair and it needs to be changed to reflect the wonderful, tolerant, live-and-let-live society Australians have created.”

Lots of love Magda.”
