Equality advocates have welcomed the Senate’s support for what they believe is a “winnable way forward” for same-sex marriage.

The Legal and Constitutional Affairs committee was established “on the voices” without opposition from either major party.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said he has spent the first week since the return of parliament meeting predominantly with Coalition MPs and the response has been encouraging.

“The wave of momentum that lead to Labor adopting a pro-equality policy has now hit the Coalition, with the Coalition MPs we have met now seriously considering the issue of marriage equality”, Mr Greenwich said.

“The Senate inquiry will help address some of the outstanding concerns of Coalition MPs such as how we can guarantee religious freedoms and ensure marriage remains a strong and relevant institution in Australian society.”

Mr Greenwich said the senate inquiry will provide all Australians with an opportunity to play a part in making history.

“All Australians who believe in fairness, equality, and the true meaning of marriage can now have their voiced heard through the inquiry process”.

“The inquiry means we can all play a part in making history.”
